Dilute hydrochloric acid is colourless & often used for household purposes, mostly cleaning. Concentrated hydrochloric acid solution is often light yellow in colour and more typically used in laboratory or in industry.

Hydrochloric acid is a strong inorganic acid that has many uses in industry for example; the pickling of steel and in the production of organic compounds such as PVC. Food grade hydrochloric acid is often used in the food industry to control pH or for neutralisation.

Hydrochloric acid is a corrosive substance and like all acids should be handled in a safe manner. PPE should be worn, as specified by the Hydrochloric Acid MSDS. Concentrated hydrochloric acid is highlight corrosive and particular care should be taken as it also gives of noxious fumes – local fume extraction is often essential. Dilute hydrochloric acid can still be irritant, care must still be taken & should only be handled by suitably trained persons.
