Diethyl ether has the molecular formula (C₂H₅)₂O. It is highly flammable liquid that can form explosive mixtures with air. Diethyl ether is colourless, has a very low boiling point and has a characteristic odour.

Diethyl ether is a common laboratory solvent, often used for liquid-liquid extraction as it isn't very water soluble. It has an sg of 0.71 - so is found above the aqueous layer.

Diethyl ether is often used as a fuel in radio controlled cars.
